Hidden behind the hype of thyroid and thermogenic supplements comes the supplement sleeper of the decade: calcium. Who knew?
Calcium
What It Is: Most abundant mineral in the body; derived from dairy foods.
How It Works: Regulates a hormone called calcitrol that's been
shown to increase fat metabolism in low-calorie diets. Generally, thermogenesis -- the burning of calories as metabolic heat -- tends to wane as calorie intake drops.
Research Report: A 24-week study showed that 800 mg a day of supplemental calcium or 1,200-1,300 mg from dairy foods promoted 26%-70% greater weight loss compared to subjects on a low-calcium diet.
What You Should Know: Some studies show meal-replacement powder yields favorable changes in body composition (less fat and more muscle). First, the extra protein helps keep the athlete anabolic, which increases metabolism. Second, these products are dense in calcium.
Cost: Though dairy food is about $0.30 a day, the supplemental form costs less than $0.13 daily.
Dosage: Be sure to get
1,000 mg per day from food and supplements. M&F
